Mood-Boosting Smoothie

If you’ve been feeling sluggish, irritable and craving sugar, this smoothie recipe can help to give you an energy boost so you feel less cranky during the day. Once you add more smoothies into your week, you may crave less caffeine and sugar to keep your energy going. You can then begin making healthier choices with your meals to feel overall lighter and happier!

The brain is primarily made up of fat and needs it consistently to function properly. Fats are significantly involved in neurotransmitter function, including serotonin levels. When these are affected, many people tend to feel anxious, depressed, stressed, and exhausted.

This smoothie recipe incorporates healthy fat from avocado, coconut milk and walnuts.

In addition, it contains cinnamon, spinach and bananas, which are loaded with nutrients involved with neurotransmitters and blood sugar.

Avocados contain oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that is beneficial to the mind and body. 77% of avocado’s calories are from fat, making it one of the fattiest plant foods. They also contain more potassium than bananas and other nutrients.

Coconut milk contains fatty acids, magnesium, electrolytes and more to help the body de-stress and lessen fatigue.

Walnuts have the highest amounts of omega-3 fatty acids compared to other nuts. They also contain protein, helping to balance blood sugar and keep you full longer.

A bit of cinnamon helps to flavor the recipe. This spice is also capable of balancing blood sugar, which is essential for a balanced mood and less sugar cravings.

We know spinach is a leafy green that we should eat to feel strong and healthy. This is because it contains magnesium and b-vitamins, which relieve depression and fatigue.

Bananas will add a delicious and creamy texture to the smoothie and also contain dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. B6 will help to give a burst of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

  • ½ avocado
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon walnuts
  • ½ cup baby spinach
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ banana (fresh or frozen)
  • Quality protein powder (optional)

Remember to buy organic whenever possible since many produce items contain harmful pesticides.

Once you add all of these amazing ingredients to your blender, blend and enjoy! You can add milk or water if it’s too thick or add more avocado or banana to make it creamier. Play around with this recipe to create your own mood-boosting smoothie! Pay close attention to how you feel compared to another snack or meal.
